We are proud to have the opportunity to offer this extremely well cared for Liberty 458. The Liberty 458 was designed by the legendary Doug Peterson and Menagerie is hull number 10 of 31. These boats seldom come up on the brokerage market and enjoy tremendous owner loyalty. They are superb cruising boats, rewarding owners with a comfortable ride in a seaway and offering a healthy turn of speed. This is no surprise in a Doug Peterson design. The similarities to the popular Kelly Peterson 44 and 46 is apparent when you look at the drawing.

The best thing about Menagerie is the hard work and outfitting has already been done. The teak decks have been refinished. The auto-pilot, radar, and electronics have all been recently updated. A well designed arch and davits were added which makes the aft deck very usable. Anyone who has cruised knows the importance of a good electrical system so you will be happy to know that this critical system has been thoroughly renewed. A complete canvas enclosure was added making the cockpit enjoyable in all weather. The interior is comfortable year round with a diesel furnace and air conditioning. Sails and Rigging
The Strong Track system makes hoisting, dousing, and reefing the mainsail a breeze. The owner has been sailing with the furling genoa for the most part, so the staysail stay is stored below. Lines are neatly led aft for easy handling from the cockpit.
  • Full batten mainsail (2006)
  • 135% roller furling genoa (2006)
  • Staysail
  • 110% genoa
  • Gennaker
  • Tides Marine Strong Track (2006)
  • Selden Furlex furler
  • Inner forestay onboard, not rigged
  • Forespar telescoping whisker pole
  • Lines neatly led aft

Engine and mechanical
Menagerie is powered by a reliable fresh water cooled Perkins 4-236 diesel with 2621 hours. Racor 500 filters were installed in 2007 as part of the preparation to cruise south. There is a refrigerator/freezer and a separate custom refrigerator installed under a settee.
  • Perkins 4-236
  • Velvet Drive transmission 2.1:1
  • 3 blade 20x15 inch prop
  • Fresh water cooled
  • Hydraulic steering
  • 1.5 inch stainless prop shaft

Electronics
Menagerie features newer high quality electronics. The auto pilot is a Com Nav Commander that was installed in 2006. The radar is a newer Nobeltec digital radar. Digital radar has a lot of advantages over the older technology. The built in chartplotter and the computer downstairs are independent navigation systems offering total redundancy.
  • Icom 502 VHF w/ remote mic at helm 2006
  • Nobeltec DIGITAL 40 mile radar
  • Garmin 3006C chartplotter (2006)
  • Nobeltec Admiral GPS
  • Interphase sonar
  • Nav PC runs radar and charting
  • Electronic charts Canada to Ensenada
  • Data Marine wind, depth, and speed

Electrical and Plumbing
Before the owners of Menagerie left to go cruising they performed a significant electrical upgrade. High quality components were chosen and the system is well proven. Most components were new in 2006. The owner is installing a new inverter later this month.
  • 8 6v house batteries, 940A (2010)
  • Xantrex Link 2000 monitor
  • Balmar 150A altenator w/ twin belts
  • KISS high output wind generator
  • Interior lighting replaced in 2005
  • 2 12v starter batteries
  • Hersee Cole battery switches
  • Balmar Max Charge Digital Smart Reg.
  • Blue Sea battery combiner
  • Xantrex 1800w inverter w/ GFCI

Accommodations
Menagerie features a highly livable interior that works well for long term passagemaking or living aboard. The aft stateroom is one of the best we've seen in a boat this size. It features a fore and aft queen, huge vented hanging lockers, shelves, cabinets, and drawers. There is an ensuite head with shower and marble counters. The aft stateroom is separated from the rest of the boat by the pass-thru where you find the nav station outboard and engine room access inboard along as well as the electrical panels. A workbench with drawers is in the pass-thru and is a great place for boat projects.

As you can see in the photos the saloon is warm, inviting, and eminently comfortable. The galley adjoins the saloon but is out of the way of foot traffic. Natural light gives the area a light airy feel.

Forward of the saloon is a the guest stateroom that is very private with a second head forward. The guest stateroom has a lot of storage.
The forward head is a new electric toilet and all of the sanitation hoses have been replaced.

Galley
Menagerie has a very usable and comfortable galley. Some friends of ours have a Liberty 458 and I have spent enough time on board socializing to appreciate the galley. The marble counter tops are lovely and the deep stainless sinks will be appreciated by all. A Seagull filter, effective against bacteria, has been installed to make the water clean and safe.
  • Top and front loading refrigerator with compressor renewed in 2004
  • Custom refrigerator under settee with new compressor in 2008
  • New Force 10 3 burner stove in 2002
  • New microwave in 2008
  • Double stainless steel sinks
  • Foot pumps

Hull and deck
Menagerie was built by the well regarded Shin Fa yard. The decks are uncluttered and the ground tackle arrangements are well thought out. Canvas was renewed in 2006 and is in excellent shape. All exterior teak was refinished in 2009.
  • 66lb Bruce anchor w/ 350' 3/8 chain
  • 35lb Danforth
  • Stainless steel lifelines and gates
  • Mast pulpits
  • Nilsson electric windlass
  • Davits
  • Swim ladder

Canvas
You could easily spend upwards of $20000 on a canvas project like the one that was performed on Menagerie in 2006. All of the canvas is Sunbrella and is in excellent condition.
  • Full cockpit enclosure
  • Bimini
  • Mainsail cover
  • Winch covers
  • Closed cell cockpit cushions
  • Dodger
  • Hatch covers
  • Sheet Bags
  • Handrail covers
