MOONDOGGIE - 1976 36' ISLANDER SAILBOATS 36
Brisbane California
$19,900 USD

Yacht for sale is a 1976 ISLANDER SAILBOATS 36' "MOONDOGGIE " 36 Cruising/Racing Sailboat in Brisbane, California, United States. Design, Construction & Performance

Alan Gurney’s objective in the design of the I36 was to create a “36-foot yacht that would be a competitive machine but also could cruise a family comfortably.”  Since Gurney was also responsible for go fast classics like Windward Passage, Guinevere and Great Britain II, the I36 racing pedigree was guaranteed.  These are fast and stiff boats with a 40% ballast to displacement ratio and even 30 years later, they still hold their own on the race course.  The I36 will do 8 knots and practically steer herself in 20-30 knot winds without being overpowered, however it can feel a little sluggish in light air.

MOONDOGGIE has been owned since 2006 and is being sold as the owners have purchased another boat.   It has been extensively updated with gear for racing with many new winches, etc. and repowered with a Beta Marine Diesel.

\nReview of the boat....
\n...from the owners....
\n
\nMoondoggie is a well-updated example of one of SF Bay’s most popular designs, that sails and handles beautifully in SF’s winds.  The boat is totally ready for competitive club or weekend racing, and can be cruised by a couple.
\n
\n6 of her 10 winches are upgraded with self-tailing Lewmars; the primary 58’s are massive to lighten the load.  All upgraded sheet stoppers, upgraded Harken traveler.  Racing furler with  double head foil.  Upgraded hydraulic back stay, and several shrouds replaced.  Four spinnakers, four headsails, including furling, and two mains.  Retractable lazy jacks.
\n
\nThe engine is upgraded to a lighter Beta Marine diesel with low hours and just serviced.  Cutlass bearing just replaced.  VHF, knot and depth meters.
\n
\nThe interior has not been ignored.  All upholstery replaced. The new custom headliner has built-in lighting and easy access to deck gear. Music system with indoor and cockpit speakers.  New stove and microwave.  New toilet and sink in head.  All windows replaced and the fore hatch upgraded. It’s a dry boat; we even have the canvas cover for that quirky Islander companionway.  A custom crafted bar storage swivels out of that otherwise useless little hanging locker, ready for dockside victory celebrations or cruising cocktails.
\n
\nSleeps 6-7 in two double bunks, quarter berth, and two single bunks (one swings up from bulkhead.)
\n
\nIn her previous life as Tomcat, she was a class winner.  In her current life, she has won the Jazz Cup and finishes consistently in the money on Friday nights.  And you can cruise comfortably on weekends.

\nAccommodations
\n
\nThe layout below begins with a sizeable vee-berth and a head/shower combination to port.  In the salon, there are two straight settees on port and starboard separated with a table that folds up to the bulkhead to create a feeling of spaciousness.  An L-shaped galley on starboard has a double sink and a three burner LPG stove.  On port, there is a nav station that is outboard facing and the quarter berth behind it forms a seat.
\n
\nThe best feature of the interior is the companionway steps that are truly steps as opposed to a ladder and are easy to maneuver.  They also make a great seat when extra bodies are down below for cocktails.
\n
\n
\nTankage \n

\n
The I36 carries 50 gallons of water in fiberglass tanks under the settees and about 30 gallons of fuel in an aluminum tank.  That amount of fuel is good for coastal cruising but it means that jerry jugs will be necessary for any kind of extended voyaging.
