Construction

Over the past 30 years Vicem has earned an international reputation for delivering beautiful boats made with cold molded wooden hulls. Built in Turkey, Vicem hulls are widely agreed to be stronger than fiberglass and their interiors are second to none.

Construction utilizes the West System (WoodEpoxySaturationTechnique) in the following, simplified manner:

1) A female jig is made of the hull shape in plywood sections
2) Longitudinal laminated frames are attached to the inside of the jig
3) Transverse frames are laminated to the shape of the longitudinal frames
4) The female jig is removed and the hull is planked with four layers of mahogany or sapele wood. The layers are put on the diagonal, and fastened in place, (2) 3/8" and (2) 3/16" planks.
5) After each layer is put in place, epoxy s rolled on which seals the wood and adheres the next layer.
6) A layer of E-glass and epoxy is put on the inside and outside of the hull.
7)An epoxy top coat is applied to the outside which is then sanded down with long battens to make the surface fair.
8) After priming, the hull is coated with AWLgrip linear polyurethane paint.

This process is very labor intensive, and results in a hull that is comparable in thickness to a fiberglass hull, but unquestionably more puncture resistant and arguably stronger, but with a superior weight to strength ratio. The results are a quieter hull that absorbs vibration, has inherent insulation, and provides a solid ride that must be experienced to appreciate.
